A Journey through the World of Quilting
with Nicky Haron
The dynamic and diverse works of multi-award-winning quilter Nicky Haron took us on a journey through the world of quilting in all its forms. Nicky loves it all, and works across all genres – the eclectic stash of gorgeous quilts she will bring to the Gympie Rotary Quilt & Craft Spectacular will include Japanese boro, art quilts, hand and wool applique, machine and hand piecing. Some quilts featured recycled fabrics, a particular interest of Nicky’s. She also enjoys embroidery and toy making and will bring examples of these to complement the quilt display.

Nicky, how long have you been quilting?
I started quilting just before my daughter was born – over 30 years ago
What got you hooked?
My Mum was a keen sewer and I learnt to sew as a child, so had been making my own clothes, doing embroidery and making toys for years before I discovered quilting. I think it was the fact that you can make so many different types of quilts from such a range of textiles that appealed to me. Quilting is never boring and there are always new ideas to try!
What delights you in quilting?
I love that there are quilts for every occasion and purpose. The combination of beauty and utility in quilting is special. Not every quilt is a masterpiece, but even the simplest quilt made as a gift can bring much joy to both the quilter and the recipient. This quote from “Artists in Folk Art by American Women” says it all: “A woman made ragged utility quilts as fast as she could so her family wouldn’t freeze, and she made one as beautiful as she could so her heart wouldn’t break.”
