Rag Rugs from recycled fabrics

Deirdre Casparian began making braided rugs about 10 years ago, when she had more old t-shirts than she needed for rags. Since then, she has experimented with a variety of fabrics and techniques, preferring plain t-shirt cotton because it is easy to work, does not fray, and rolls nicely when cut in strips.  However, woven fabrics make a firmer rug.  Deirdre experiments with simple spirals – round or oval – and braids, knots and weaves her designs.

As a volunteer for Red Cross, Deirdre donates her rugs – they can be purchased from Red Cross Gympie…. but be quick!
