Described somewhat inadequately as “applying motifs onto fabric using a needle and thread”, embroidery, crochet and needlework are so much more than just placing stitches in a line or filling in an area with colour. Whether created by masters or beginners, each precious piece has a story to tell, preserving a moment in time, bringing entwined threads to life, richly embellishing with passion and love.

“The Gentle Arts” is a collaborative display of the works of selected artisans who are passionately committed to their craft. It is a diverse collection – from exquisitely elegant and delicate to brazenly bold – but all are hand embellished, taking many devoted hours to complete. Techniques on display will include hardanger, goldwork, stumpwork, cross stitch, ribbon embroidery, wool embroidery, lacemaking, heirloom, Brazilian, sashiko, Japanese beading, temari, Assissi, huckaback Swedish weaving, Crewel, bargello, Dorset, Spanish blackwork – even “crazy” embroidery.

Meet the artisans – be enriched and be inspired.
